Little League SAFE (Formerly ASAP)

Introduced in 1995 and long the pacesetter in youth sports safety, Little League has taken the lead with the development of ASAP (A Safety Awareness Program).  With the help of corporate sponsors, Musco Lighting and AIG Insurance, ASAP has increased overall safety awareness, reduced injuries by 80% and lowered insurance costs for participating leagues.

Each year, Ken Caryl Little League formally submits, and Little League formally approves, a League-specific Safety Plan.  This plan is maintained by the League's Safety Officer.  Compliance with this Safety Plan is the responsibility of every registrant, parent, coach, volunteer, and Board Member. Only with the attention of everyone can we ensure the safest possible practice and game environment.

Now Little League ASAP has become SAFE. Along with Little League Safe to Play, these two initiatives are intended to build on the success and benefits of the ASAP program to help our leagues address the safety concerns of 2026 and beyond. Our goal remains providing the best baseball experience we can in the safest manner possible.

In today's world, safety incorporates many aspects, so this page will serve as your resource for all the areas that we are trying to impact.

Emergency Services:  In most cases, please call 911 to be connected to the closest emergency and first responder resources

Mandatory Reporting:  KCLL Board Members, Coaches and Volunteers are considered mandatory reporters. Please click the
following link to access resources for reporting neglect and abuse in the State of Colorado. CO4Kids

- Background Checks & Training:  All of our volunteers, including board members, are required to submit for an annual
background check and are required to complete specific training depending on their role.

Background Checks:  This is administered by JDP in partnership with Little League International. The check is specific to Little
League and focuses on criminal activity, especially any related to, or committed against children. There are no substitutes
allowed. You can learn more by visiting this website JDP BACKGROUND CHECKS.

Training:  All Volunteers, including Board members, Coaches and team volunteers must complete an Abuse Awareness
course presented by Little League University. This is similar to Mandatory Reporter courses required by many other youth
organizations. The objective is raise the awareness of all forms of abuse and provide an environment that protects our players
   from any type of abuse.

All Coaches and Board members must also complete a First Aid Awareness course presented by Little League University and
Concussion protocol course through the CDC. These courses are intended to raise the awareness of all those in our
organization to be able to recognize symptoms and provide appropriate first assistance to players that may be injured during
   practice or games.

All Background Checks and Training, must be completed annually regardless of any date that may appear on the training
certificates. To learn more, please visit Little League University and the CDC HEADS UP program.

- Safety Plan:  Under ASAP, KCLL completed a yearly safety plan and submitted it to Little League for review and approval. Under
SAFE, the safety plan has been replaced by a SAFE survey summary, which is available here, SAFE Summary. Most of the
information is similar to what has been presented in the past, but this is intended to be a living document which can be
updated as needed throughout the season. Contained in this document are multiple resources for the league and families
pertaining player (and spectator) safety at KCLL.

- Accident Reporting and Supplementary Insurance:  Accidents and injuries do occur, and we want to be sure to handle them
appropriately. All injuries should be reported as soon as possible using the Little League Incident Tracking Form available
here, LLI Incident Tracking Form. This form should be emailed, along with any appropriate documentation, to
[email protected]. The primary responsibility for communicating information regarding an injury falls on the Head
Coach. If we receive information for alternate sources, we will contact the coach and the player's family before proceeding
   further.

Supplementary Insurance:  The insurance program provided by LLI is detailed HERE, but it is intended to be coverage for
injuries that exceed the coverage of the policy held by the player's family. The following link gives an outline of the steps to
gaining coverage and compensation from Little League File An Accident Claim. You can download the AIG Accident form from
within the previous link, or you can download it here, AIG Accident Form. In all cases, please contact our President and/or
Safety Officer for help and assistance.

- Lightning Policy:  The KCLL lightning policy is based on recommendations from the National Weather Service and the National
Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. While no policy can guarantee 100% against a lightning strike, our policy has been
created to minimize the risk to KCLL participants.

Every coach should download the Weatherbug weather app on their smartphones which can report lightning strikes. The
home team will designate one parent or coach to monitor area lighting strikes. If the app indicates lightning within a 5 mile
radius of the field, the parent will inform the umpire and game play will be immediately suspended for 15 minutes. In the event
that the app is not working or does not indicate a visible strike, spectators are invited to calmly approach the home plate
umpire or closest head coach to inform them of the lightning and request a delay discussion. The parent or coach monitoring
the weather app should NOT be the same parent or coach using Game Changer to track the game. If the chosen app again
indicates lighting in the area during the 15 minute suspension, the 15 minutes suspension period will restart. It will be up to
umpires and coaches to assess game continuation or cancellation.

Every field will be treated independently. The coaches at every field will be in charge of deciding to suspend game play. If
thunder is audible, a coach or parent must open the chosen app and watch for lightning.

Once game play or practice is suspended, all PLAYERS AND UMPIRES UNDER THE AGE OF 18 must leave the playing field and
dugouts immediately (dugouts and enclosures with metal roofs or framing are not a safe shelter during a lightning storm) and
seek shelter in a hard-topped, rubber-tired vehicle. It is recommended that coaches and parents leave the playing field and
seek shelter in a hard topped, rubber tired vehicle.

These policies are in affect at any field that is used by KCLL for games or practices, whether home or away. In the event that
the policies in use at an away field are more stringent, those should be followed. In NO CASE, should a game or practice be
resumed inside of the 15 minute window. If a game is resumed inside the 15 minute window, or with active lightning inside the 5
mile radius, please contact the league officials listed above with as accurate an account as possible. Please note that there is
some lag with most of the weather apps that provide lightning strike information, so exercise some discretion when contacting
   us.
